One of PRBT's most popular tours is the trip to Petit Manaan to view the nesting colony of Atlantic Puffins. This unique bird comes ashore to only a few of the outermost islands in the Gulf of Maine to nest and raise their young. The rest of the year they spend bobbing about in the North Atlantic. They are endearing to many because of their large colorful beak and comical appearance. They are difficult to photograph, especially in flight, and are a challenge even for the experts. Petit Manaan is a alive with birds in the spring and summer. Other species that nest here include terns, guillemots and gulls. The Coast Guard maintains a functioning lighthouse on Petit Manaan, built in 1855. The island is part of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
